Fashion to save lives

Saturday 29th of October marked the Ist ever event by East Africans in Liverpool to raise money for children in East Africa. The event was held at the Frontline Agency in Wavertree, many attended including a representative from the Kenyian High Commision. It was highly impressive to see close connection among Africans and Europeans, which demonstrate an element of togetherness and care for starving children in East Africa.
According to a report by UNICEF (2011), "children and women are the most vulnerable. A total of 6.7 million children in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia need urgent assistance, including almost 320,000 children suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition".

The event was entertaining with a fashion show by headlined by Asakeoge, and other cultural designs, there was music, bollywood dance, African drums, food and drinks. Check out some pictures taken at the event:

Rihanna VS Grace Jones

As an artist her music continues to appear in movies and serves as samples to many singers and rappers. Her style and image which was developed by her stylist Jean Goude has been copied by many from, American politicians, 1970s boy bands and Annie Lennox to more recently the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Her low cut faded hairstyle from the 1970s era was adopted by black men all around the world and continues to be popular today in Africa.

In the 1970s-1980s she partied with the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfield, Pat Cleveland etc and became a favourite with European designers who used her as their muse. Photos of her promoting their lines became some of the best taken for the designers. Rihanna’s stylist Mariel Haenn admits she is one of the top influencers of her work. Lady Gaga has also admitted that she is one of her role models and was recently shunned when she wanted to sing an duet with her. She is scarier than scary spice, crazier than Lady gaga cooler than rihanna, sexier than naomi Campbell with a voice that spans two and half octaves, I present to you GRACE JONES

African Wax Print

African textile trade dates back in the 1900s. The prints were later developed by European traders using machineries. African wax print is produced using resistant dyeing technique. The surface of the fabric is painted with a resist substance, which in the case of batik is wax. The waxes are drawn in different colours: bright, brash and in unusual combinations. The design can be big and bold as well as delicate and subtle but always printed on both sides. The fabrics often tell stories of proverbs, poems and traditional African fables.

Today, African print is worn across continents and, has been particularly popular with A-list celebrities like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani to name a few.
