Fashion to save lives

Saturday 29th of October marked the Ist ever event by East Africans in Liverpool to raise money for children in East Africa. The event was held at the Frontline Agency in Wavertree, many attended including a representative from the Kenyian High Commision. It was highly impressive to see close connection among Africans and Europeans, which demonstrate an element of togetherness and care for starving children in East Africa.
According to a report by UNICEF (2011), "children and women are the most vulnerable. A total of 6.7 million children in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia need urgent assistance, including almost 320,000 children suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition".

The event was entertaining with a fashion show by headlined by Asakeoge, and other cultural designs, there was music, bollywood dance, African drums, food and drinks. Check out some pictures taken at the event:

Laughing, chatting... just trying to ease the nerves. Ladies in Asakeoge outfits expect the pink sequine dress.

ASAKEOGE IN MISS EBENE FRANCE

Asakeoge has done it again, this time in a top magazine. Asakeoge was honoured a two page spread in one of the most fashion-forward magazine in Europe, Miss Ebene. Miss Ebene is a magazine for the modern woman, specifically those of Afro-Carribean heritage. Hollywood stars like Alicia Keys, Meagan Good, Janet Jackson and Ciara have graced the cover of this impeccable magazine. Equally, top models and fashion icons like Naomi Campbell, Rihanna, Keri Hilson and Leona Lewis have charmed their way to a feature in this magazine, well not that they had to do anything....hmm...life threatening.

Featuring Asakeoge in this magazine has officially confirmed the level of creativity in the making of these pieces, and the unique vision captured for new generation fashion as seen in all Asakeoge couture. Creating unique pieces that represents individuality is inevitable; it is important to focus on quality material and clothing that enhances the brand globally. This is the beginning of many creative designs to be seen by Asakeoge. Watch out for the A/W 11 collections.

Asakeoge BEFFTA Dresses

BEFFTA Awards is a global brand which includes BEFFTA TV. The award took place on Saturday 22nd October at The Lighthouse in London. This award is a distinctly special ceremony recognising and honouring the best showbiz and entertainment personalities in the black and ethnic communities in the UK and internationally. BEFFTA Awards is the first of its kind rewarding outstanding achievements and contributions from Africans, Caribbeans and Asians in entertainment, film, fashion, television and arts. This award was founded by Pauline Long, also aims to inspire black and ethnic personalities worldwide to achieve at the highest levels.

Asakeoge was well represented at the award ceremony. What we find important on the night was the diverse fashion styles, some were a disaster. However, we do need your views on this.

Have you ever been indecisive on what to wear? I think that would be most of us. But, have you decided to make a dress for yourselve because you couldn't find something suitable for an occassion or event? Well, that would be Asake Agoro, creative director of Asakeoge. Asake made this Bella Rouge dress specially for the BEFFTA Awards. She team this outfit with a gold-sequine heels complimenting the sequine top of the dress and minimal accessories, amazing!

Right: Asakeoge top client, Liz Yemoja in Asakeoge dress. Liz looks demure in this dress. The dress displays her figure without creating unnecessary invitation. Black lacy dress is so this season and Liz has upped her game with this number. Stunning!

Fabulous Forties Fashion: Ultra Sexy, Ultra Feminine

On top of my trend list for Autumn/Winter 2011 is the Forties look which can easily be worked by every body shape ! Fashion in the forties was all about womens liberation, following World War II the place of the woman was displaced in society. Suddenly women had to be stronger and no longer just housewives, and in some homes they started to take on the roles of men and also in the workplace. This obviously had a huge social impact especially in the fashion industry. This trend was soon translated in fashion as Powerful & Confident while still being Sexy & Feminine.
The true hallmarks of fashion in the early 1940s included an austere silhouette with narrow hips, padded shoulders, and all manner of hats. The working-class look of icons such as Rosie de Riveter became chic, as women of all social standings joined the war effort. They kept things going at home, taking over the jobs – and the closets – of husbands and other male relatives. Class barriers fell and people dressed down. It was considered gauche to be showy during a time of shortage. Designers flexed their creative muscle – even creating beautifully decorated gas masks for eveningwear!

The easiest way to work this look is wearing Blazers, Dresses and tops with cinched in waists (an effect that can be gotten with thin belts), wide pallazo trousers with masculine fits and long/mid-length jackets and wide fitting hats. A major key to this trend is accesorizing -accessories are always key !
I especially love this era in fashion because it was ultra feminine, the essence was in creating a hourglass shape, hemlines were below the knee and necklines were high. It had a soft romantic aura.
Recognize the special features of the '40s dress that make it special in the history of fashion. The '40s dress is:

  • Flattering to the female figure; classic in style, emphasizes the waist, producing an "hourglass" silhouette.

  • Had shoulder pads in dresses, blouses, shirts and coats to make shoulders square with a military feel.

  • The two piece skirt suit became very popular in the 40's.
  • Skirts and dresses were A-line in shape (not pencil tight) and dropped down to the low knee. This was shorter then the 1930's and set the standard for the 50's.

This period inspired some of the pieces from my Spring/Summer 2011 collection as seen below. images from www.asakeoge.com

My favourite look from this era is the Peplum Skirt. It has it's roots in the 19th century but didnt really take off till the 1940s and thanks to Ms Bradshaw in SATC it was revived in the noughties too.
The Peplum is fun because it goes against  all the usual "does my bum look big in this" style conventions and looks surprisingly chic.
Many varieties of peplums were in vogue: butterfly, bustle and gathered peplums were a few. Ruffles found their way to skirt hems, necklines and waists. Gored, gathered and A-line skirts were topped with soft, feminine blouses. Blouses donned bows at the center-front neckline and might sport full or puffy sleeves. Collars were cut generously full, in peter pan and traditional pointed shirt-collar designs. Lace also accentuated blouses around the neckline.

Today's peplum dresses are more daring with lower necklines and higher hems. Whatever your take on it bare as much as you dare. This style workes with most body shapes as if worn correctly it creates that essential hourglass shape. High heels are a must to elongate your legs, accessozize with a clutch and a large statement ring.

Here's my take on it, a peplum style skirt with an animal print peter pan collar blouse and the oh so important skinny belt !

Peplum styles are classic and always come back in vogue so it is worth investing in a few pieces for your wardrobes, scour thrift shops, do some research and have fun rocking this trend !

Creating art through fashion

So, summer is finally over! What has been the highlights of this year's fashion? Well, if we begin to list the trends, we might end-up writing a book. Instead, we have decided to create themes using Asakeoge's S/S11 collections.

This dress is beautiful and classy. We couldn't think of a better way to create this, the 60s springs to mind, reinventing the 60s in a good-old English style. Very Tweegy!

Left: The Creative director, Asake Agoro showcasing some of her designs on BEFFTA TV. We have decided to create this image using a contemporary fashion art form.
Right: Asakeoge in the media, but we have themed this using a tailored blazer and trousers to give it a Victoria Beckham egde!

Freshers Week is a massive hit in the UK. This is the only time students get 20% off high-street brands. So, we have decided to create this theme for all Asakeoge's freshers. One word, fashion-forward!
