“I would like to welcome every black and ethnic person to celebrate the Black History Month by showing love and support not only to BEFFTA awards UK 2011 nominees through voting but to all African/Caribbean businesses, organisations, charities and projects. Together as a community we can achieve a lot. We are a community of talented, intelligent and hard working individuals and groups and the world must know about this. However they can only know about us if we show them what we are capable of doing as a united community. I hope we will continue to support one another not only in the Black History Month but in all 12 months of the year”. Pauline Long

Please tell me about yourself and what you do?
I am Dji Dieng, born in Senegal, raised in Europe and the USA. Actually I am working successfully as model on all five continents for the best designers and hand-selected clients for product presentations and commercials.

What motivated you to do what you do?
It was a real hazard that I became a model, and the motivation was and still is the challenge to be at the heartbeat of the fashion business, discovering creative people and new cultures.

What are the positive and drawbacks of the industry?
The positive aspect of my job is that I am able to transfuse my image for the benefit of humanitarian missions.

What is your highlight (s) of your career so far?
This is one question I cannot respond to as I have so many highlights in my career. But certainly some of the most important highlights are the awards I received for my social engagements as the Award for Humanity, the Leading Ladies Award and the United Nations Volunteer Award. And I am still the only Supermodel bestowed with these honours, and I will continue to assume my social responsibility.

Do you consider yourself a fashionista?
I am probably a Fashionista, but not addicted. I also wear simple and easy-going cloth where I feel comfortable in them. But of course I am addicted to shoes and bags as any woman.

What are your favourite brands/outfit/style?
Favourite brands are many, I wear an outfit depending on the style and occasion. One of my favourite is certainly Alexander McQueen. He was gifted with inspiration and creativity. But there are also many others I love. The list would be endless, I wear them all.

Who are your fashion inspirations?
My fashion inspirations are the girls and women in the different countries I travel for my job. Each has its style and many things can be combined for your own style.

How would you describe Asakeoge designs?
You want to know the truth? Okay, then I will tell you the truth: Your collections are marvelous, colourful and amazing. I loved the entry page with the models wearing different styles. I love them! Wow. Congratulations.

What are your future plans?
My future plans are certainly to continue for a few more years of my modeling career and also my humanitarian assignments. Also, I would continue to expand my other activities which will become more important the moment I terminate my modeling career, as I have established my own company with my management some years ago.

Any advice to aspiring models who want to get into the modelling industry?
Oh, sure as confirmed supermodel I do have a lot of advise to aspiring models. The most important is to be realistic even dreaming about becoming a model. Not everything that shine is glamour. Being prudent but following the dream. To get a lot of discipline and making sacrifices in life, and to be at the right time at the right place.

Thank you so much for honouring this interview, I wish you all the best in your career.
Thank you for the interview opportunity and your wishes are most welcome.
Peace and Love.

Rihanna VS Grace Jones

As an artist her music continues to appear in movies and serves as samples to many singers and rappers. Her style and image which was developed by her stylist Jean Goude has been copied by many from, American politicians, 1970s boy bands and Annie Lennox to more recently the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Her low cut faded hairstyle from the 1970s era was adopted by black men all around the world and continues to be popular today in Africa.

In the 1970s-1980s she partied with the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio Armani, Karl Lagerfield, Pat Cleveland etc and became a favourite with European designers who used her as their muse. Photos of her promoting their lines became some of the best taken for the designers. Rihanna’s stylist Mariel Haenn admits she is one of the top influencers of her work. Lady Gaga has also admitted that she is one of her role models and was recently shunned when she wanted to sing an duet with her. She is scarier than scary spice, crazier than Lady gaga cooler than rihanna, sexier than naomi Campbell with a voice that spans two and half octaves, I present to you GRACE JONES

African Wax Print

African textile trade dates back in the 1900s. The prints were later developed by European traders using machineries. African wax print is produced using resistant dyeing technique. The surface of the fabric is painted with a resist substance, which in the case of batik is wax. The waxes are drawn in different colours: bright, brash and in unusual combinations. The design can be big and bold as well as delicate and subtle but always printed on both sides. The fabrics often tell stories of proverbs, poems and traditional African fables.

Today, African print is worn across continents and, has been particularly popular with A-list celebrities like Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani to name a few.
